    i was thinking the same thing if i did the first one i would have to quilt it with something to enhance the cream color squares. and if i did the second layout i would most likely do an edge to edge.

    I think this is one where the quilting would make a difference. If you are going to put a motif in the squares created in the top one it would be very effective, but the bottom one is very pretty.

    Also the top one looks a bit more masculine to me, I guess because it has blocks of dark colour. Who is the recipient?

    I like the first one, especially if you have some fancy quilting to do in the white squares.

    The first one looks a little less scrappy, which is my preference and I agree with the comment about using the light space for showing off some quilting.

    I like them both, but the first one is my choice. If you sew the second one together from your design board as is, there is a block in the second row, second from the right side that needs to be turned a quarter turn.

    They're both beautiful - love your fabric choices. I think I'll vote for the 2nd layout.

    I like both versions, but the first one is my favorite. No one would know they are the same pattern, especially done in a different colorway.
