    Default Disappearing Quilt!

Hi all, my friend recently showed me a post on her phone of a "beautiful" pieced and appliqued quilt that was entered in a fair. Low and behold, the quilt disappeared. So just be aware of how quilts are displayed at County Fairs or any other places. Sad that we aren't living in a safer world.

Why do people think if they want something just take it and feel proud of taking it. More then likely the quilt will be someone's Christmas present this year. Cameras are so inexpensive now to have installed, there is no reason not to have one on the fair displays.

Oh years ago a quilter friend in Australia was telling me about that happening there. She was retired and went around helping with shows at various places. Some venues started putting the quilts up with cords that were attached at each end of the stands. Worked well. But perhaps more security is necessary. one never knows what happens during the nighttime.

Our local very small fair stated that no quilt could be removed without authorization. I delivered a friend's quilts for her and--thank goodness--had a letter stating that I could also remove them, complete with all necessary info, including her cell number. But anything can be forged or 'manufactured'. Just depends how determined the thief is.

Make sure the venue has security cameras if possible and that the building is locked and alarmed when no one is there. Also be aware that many smaller venues have a section in their rules that reads, “ efforts are made to protect your quilts but we are not responsible for damage or theft and you exhibit at your own risk”

At our county fair all quilts are displayed on a stage, with old fashioned merchandise show cases surrounding it. So you view from a distance of maybe 8ft. Plus a woman security personel who can answers all questions you might have. No one else is allowed near the quilts.

sad this is happening. We used to display quilts in the area of the church used for activities and funeral luncheons. Folks could buy one for a small donation and this money would be used to ship the quilts overseas for donation. Yep, lately some of them have been stolen. We have had to get a surveillance system for the church doors too and several are now kept locked.
oh, and if someone had asked, the church would have given them a quilt

Not worth the meager prize money to risk having a valuable quilt stolen. So sorry this happened to your friend and shame on the thief.

Seems like people feel justified in taking what they want. Easier than working for it or buying it. What a shame.
