The home improvement stores carry several types of foam insulation boards. The white styrofoam board crumbles too easily.
I have written up how I made both my design walls with their pictures, names of the products used, etc. here, if that helps:

I read somewhere that the quilter used a retractable roller shade and attached flannel. When she needed to use the design wall, she pulled down the shade (I think it hung on a wall).
Just don't know how sturdy that method is.
