I am really getting into hand applique and I have almost every color of DMC 6 strand embroidery floss that works great on cotton fabric but I tried it on wool and it doesn't show up very well, plus if I use more than one strand at a time I am having trouble keeping the strands the same length. My LQS says that it shows much better if you use the DMC #8 pearl cotton (or sometimes the #12) that comes in a ball but they want anywhere from $2.75 up to $5.25 depending on the brand and if it is variegated or not. So when I was in there today I bought one color to try and they are right it is so much better.

My question is: since I need so many colors I was wondering if anyone can tell me where I might get them a little cheaper.

Thanks in advance for you thoughts

I've only done one wool project and used only black perle to give the project a primitive look

I use Perle Cotton for Huck Embroidery. I have purchased them online from JoAnns and Herrshcners. Michaels sometime has them in the store. I use #5 also. I like the Perle because there are more colors available but you also might try crochet thread. #10 is the same as 5 and #20 the same as 8. The #5 in Perle is also available in smaller amounts and lots of colors and available at JoAnns and Michaels stores.

JoAnn's has a package of 10-25 colors and they are very, very reasonable. I was tempted to get the big pack, but only bought a couple to try it. I really like it and it is great for twilling and even embroidering.

i managed to build my stock of perle cottons slowly but surely-
when ever i would find a sale- or a coupon to use i would grab 3-5 new colors-
and of course when i just needed a certain one- i would try to buy 2-
it has taken a few years but i have a pretty good color selection- just getting what is needed then filling in here & there-
too expensive (and overwhelming) to try to get them all at once.
if you visit some of the wool sites, and the 'primitives' sites they also offer perle cottons- and some of them have good sales-
a couple to check out off & on:
    Sue Spargo
    Primative Gatherings
    Searsport Rug Hooking
    Backyard Gatherings
    The Woolery

i use basically 3 sizes of perle cottons on a regular basis-
    #5, #8 & #12

once in a while you will walk into to a shop and find a basket of perle cottons---for $1...I GRAB THEM UP QUICK!

enjoy the process of (growing) your threads collections :)

I love these: http://www.threadart.com/shop/category.aspx?catid=283 I use them for big stitch quilting but because they are on a spool I can also use them for stitching on my machine

Thanks for all the great suggestions and websites. I will have to go check them out. I will be needing some soon since I just ordered the Folk Art Album Quilt Kit from Primitive Gatherings.

    Thanks again
