My Viking does not need oil, either. It is a sealed unit and oiling is not required. There is even a warning against oiling it in the manual. One of the reasons I chose the Viking.

I just took my Janome Plat.760 in for a cleaning etc and did ask the repairman about oiling it. He said Nope, doesn't need it. He also said to have it serviced about every 1-1/2 to 2 yrs.

Ditto! I just had my machine in and I was told I would to more damage then good by oiling. Everything is sealed and so the oil would only invite the dust to stay and gum up the machine.

I would take your brother to a repair man who knows Brothers, they do oil somewhere and the bearings need to be checked and repacked. It cost me oh about $100.00 for them to clean, pack bearing oil and make sure everything was in working order. Just well worth it if it's been 5 years.

I'm so glad to here that. I was wondering the same thing. I do remember about seven years ago they told me not to oil an Elna. If I had not read this here, I probably would have put a dot of it inside my bobbin case. Thank's everyone for the answers.

Neither does my Viking. That's fine with me. I hated that job on my other machines.
