I would do it even louder and longer. She sounds like a controller.

I would ohhh and ahh for everyone, not just the best ones. I can find something ahhhhh worthy in every quilt! Smiles
I suspect some of the ohh -ing amd ahh-ing is reward and respect for the work it took to make something. ....and I
    would be happy with that.

That was an uptight woman! The ooos and ahhhsresponse must have made the quilter so happy. Sorry you were squelched in your method of natural appreciation. I was called over to look at a quilt. It impressed me to the bones since the design used my favorite fabrics in an inspired way. I just quietly soaked the beauty up with my eyes and finally told the woman not to let it out of her sight. The sight has stayed in my mind for weeks and finally I am working on a different rendition that has me highly motivated. It is not a look alike but influenced by her work. How our work can inspire one another and yet no one can reproduce exactly as the insight, the skill, the fabrics available etc are never the same. Her work gave me the courage to tackle one of KF's quilts using the same traditional block. The one thing I did come away with was a confidence that this was not her first time using the traditional design idea as it would be too difficult to work imaginatively the first time around. But with any art....the idea can and should be worked with to progress to the level where you are truly happy with the outcome, and can let the idea go and move on to something else.

I have many facial expressions for quilts, inc. oohing and awing.

I think i must be one of the noisiest appreciators at a quilt exhibition. I'm staring and oohing and awing over everything. Maybe she needed a hug.
