Catherine,
There are no fast rules - do what YOU like to do. There is nothing worse than having to sit and work on a quilt you do not enjoy... I know this from experience - it was the quilt I thought would never end. It did finally.

I think if one finds joy in using thread to sew two pieces of fabric together--they are on their way to being a quilter. I don't make anything complicated because it would steal the joy out of it for me--I like simple- to-make but looks-complicated designs. There's only so much time.... I love traditional. I love the creativity. Choosing the pattern and fabrics is my favorite part of the whole process.
Oh yeah, you are most definitely a quilter, and I second the motion to embrace all that you are. It's kind of hard to do otherwise anyway. Make decisions that bring you joy, for isn't that what being a quilter is all about?

I understand your frustration. It is so expensive to make a quilt in both time and money. Make it be what you like - you are going to display it and use it.
I have always said I am more a craftsman than an artist and I envy your desire for originality. I find that paper piecing sampler blocks breaks the pattern of so much repitition.
It's interesting, I have noticed quilts that men create are usually more unique. It is like they don't have the "rules" imprinted in thair DNA. I am 68 and I still have flashes of an old home ec teacher scolding me for breaking some rule.
Go for it and show us your results. Who knows, probably some of us will copy you.

I've had the same feeling as you only didn't have the nerve to say so! I started with the classes and learned some of the techniqes of traditional quilting but I love bright color and art quilts but haven't had the nerve to try it. My sister gave me a subscription to Quilting Arts for Christmas and I love it. I also joined SAQA which is a group of art quilters. Their ideas are great!. I love this group too because they are so encouraging and supportive

Sadly I have a problem with crazy mixed up colors on a quilt that I make. Oh they are just gorgeous to look at, but I just can't make one, that's why I probably won't be finishing the dresden plate quilt top I made.
I am just too much of a matchy-matchy person and at times, it drives me NUTS! I guess it's because I'm a libra and things have to balance with me.
Is there any hope for me? LOL
