Do you have an "artistic tempermant" about your quilting?

When I'm in the zone, leave me alone! I'm in the ZONE!!!!!
LOL Usually "in the zone" is associated with athletes. But I really think artists and musicians - anyone creative - can be in the zone..... I can tell when I'm not there ---- that is when I start making design, cutting and sewing mistakes.

Would you like it any better if they took no interest at all? Just try to remember they are being supportive in their way. (as I type this I'm trying not to laugh at my hypocritical statement! I was just complaining to DH about being told I should sell mine to :) Well, I'll take my own advice and put it in perspective.)

My husband hasnt gone so far as to tell me to sell anything -- but after I finished my last big quilt he asked me what it would cost to buy.... I told him about the $300+ I spent on supplies.... and after his eyes settled back into his head I asked him what he thought it would cost to have someone else make. He got it.

I can deal with constructive criticism. However, I have found in the past with other creative efforts that the minute I HAVE to do something, I lose all interest! Guess I never outgrew it from childhood! Now I will sell something after it is complete, but will not take pre-orders. As to my family and their opinions, well, they are welcome to them and if they start to push, well, I am a Taurus and it has been acknowledged by the entire clan that I am the most stubbon, bull headed woman on the planet so when I say enough, well, they know it is a waste of their time and energy to argue! (And I think I am a real pussycat - go figure!)

My grandmother's response, which I've always used...whether it's something I've sewn/made...when told you "should sell that"....is "Don't take the fun out of it...sewing/making whatever is NOT a job. I do it because I like to, not because I HAVE to".

It seems to me that you have two different issues.
The first is artistic decisions (pattern, color, placement, etc.). Those are part of your expression of who you are, and are yours alone to make. If you ask for advice, THEN someone may say something.
The second is the business part of quilting, & i believe that's where Dad is coming in. People who don't have the bug, don't understand why you need more than one quilt. So, they look for a way utilize the end product. He doesn't understand the NEED to express yourself, & only sees the outcome. And,no, you rarely make any money selling quilts.
Good luck, and God Bless!
