I just bought a 12 " one. A friend uses it when she does paper piecing and is showing me how she uses it.

I have a ruler like that...don't use it because I found that when you make the mark to sew on, it is >1/4" when you sew on the mark. They should have made the ruler narrower than 1/4" to compensate for the width of the mark.

I have one with the slot. It measures 1/2" from side-to-side.
I use a fine line pencil and sew on the seam side of the line.

I turned a friend on to the easy, accurate 1/4" seam method described below and she uses her 1/4" ruler instead of the sticky note pad.

She holds her ruler down with tape.

ditto from me as well, takes way too much time drawing the lines. If I want half squares there was a tute not too long ago in my quilting email newsletter
