Surge protectors are a must, but nothing will protect your machine in a direct lightning strike except being unplugged! We had a direct lightning strike that actually melted the wires and stuff inside our expensive business phone. The repair tech said he had never seen anything like it and was unable to repair it.
I use surge protectors, but unplug everything valuable during a thunderstorm!

Yes, I do, and unplug after use. Not taking any chances with my machines.

I have a good quality one on my sewing machine. It's actually worth more than the laptop I use everyday for my work. I've had to replace it once due to a storm that happened when I wasn't home. My sewing machine was totally fine.

We have surge problems here even when the wind blows and all electronics are on surge protectors and I still unplug if the weather is bad. Power goes out whenever a bird poos on the line

Absolutely, my DH insists on surge protectors for most appliances in the home, it's just a precaution, but it's best to play it safe.

I have all my machines (DSM, LA, Iron, Computer) plugged into a surge protector, but I also unplug my iron and DSM when I am not using them.

My machine is plugged into a surge protector. I unplug the machine and never leave it plugged in. It does not have to be an electrical storm; it does not have to be a full outage that can be harmful to a computer or sewing machine. My dealer strongly warned me.
