I use an APC back-up which acts as a surge protector plus gives a backup of so much time in which to turn off the computer. I do shut it and the computer down every night. I forget what it cost but it is not as cheap as a surge protector. I have 3 of them. 1 for the computers and 2 for 2 different sewing machines.

Ok, you unplug it during storms, but what happens to it if you are not at home when the storm hits? Get a good surge protector, better safe than sorry. They are much cheaper than a trip to the repair person, or worse buying a new motherboard or new machine. Protect your tools. Life is a drag when they break.

Absolutely and if I'm traveling, I unplug everything. I am curious now about the battery backup posted earlier.

I have the surge protector and for my expensive embroidery machine I was told to get a battery back up. I was told that not only surges, but variations and lower voltage can damage the machine. I picked up an inexpensive one at Best Buy for 50 and haven had any problems since.

My machine is computerized, so I have it plugged into a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). It is a surge protector as well. In case of a power outage, my machine will stay on for 20 minutes allowing me time to shut it down properly.

We have a whole house protector installed by the electric company. We pay $5.95 a month for this. Because we had this installed, they gave us several plug-in surge protectors, and we purchased a few more from them. If anything happens to appliances plugged into them because of a surge, the power company pays, not us.

Yes, my sewing machine is plugged into a surge protector. Also, I do unplug it when I am not sewing just to be safe.
