you can also use them for sewing thru paper to mark a pattern. I did this when i PP a flying geese. i pinned about 6 or 8 pieces of paper together and ran the unthreaded needle over the sewing lines. worked great.

I don't use a fresh needle with every project, but my machine, fabric and time are too valuable to waste with a questionable needle. The person who taught me to quilt said that the things to do immediately if you have a stitching problem are to rethread, clean and oil the machine and replace the needle. It still surprises me how often a needle problem I don't see of feel exists.
I have a plastic corn starch container with a slit cut by my DH that I use for my "dead" needles and rotary blades.

I have found that if I " sharpen" my needle every once in a while they last MUCH longer.. I use the little " garnet grit" bag that comeso n the " tomato" pin cushion. I just trun the needle thru few times and TADA!!! it sails thru the fabric like new.
I'd be happy to take all those old needles off everyones hands that change needles for every new project!
Money is just too tight for me to do that.....
