I only toss needles when they are broken, bent or have a burr.
Don't see a great need to get a new one otherwise. Never was instructed otherwise in either HS or college home ec sewing or tailoring classes.
Had not heard about the concept of using a new needle for each project except in posts on this board.

I haven't done this, but I heard it is a good use of used needles. When you want to mark paper for paper piecing, put a few sheets of paper under your block pattern and sew around the lines (with no thread of course) to make holes you can use as sewing lines.

I use titanium coated needles, so I don't use a new needle each time - there is no need. For my sewing machine, I change it out when I hear the pop-pop-pop of a dull needle or it breaks. For the longarm, about every couple of months. Check out the Superior Threads website for everything you ever wanted to know about needles. I've changed to using only topstitch needles for everything, it's so much easier than keeping track of them!
For my used needles and pins, I put them in a pill bottle so that they don't poke through the garbage bags and poke the people who pickup my garbage.
