I'm new to quilting, and have only made two quilts to far. Do any of you label the quilts somehow, so it has your name and the date it was made? If so, how do you do that?

The two quilts that I made were for my twin niece and nephew, I wanted to label it somehow but I wasn't sure how to do it.

I have started to label my quilts. I didn't in the beginning though. Usually just a simple "Made with prayer (date) for (name)" Sometimes it is on the back, sometimes in a block on the front. Just depends on how it strikes me at the time.

I use photo fabric paper and print label from computer, and hand stitch to back of quilt. There are many ways to label and some put on much more info on label then I do.

Lots of people just write the details on a piece of fabric. You need to use a marker that is fabric friendly, so it doesn't run or fade.

I sew that to another piece of fabric (with the information on the inside) and leave an opening so that you can turn it right side out (then whip stitch it shut).

Then you can hand tack that to your quilt.

I recently learned how to put the information in the computer and print it out on fabric that can be run through a printer. Got the "Sew-in Colorfast Fabric Sheets for Ink Jet Printers" by June Tailor, Inc. at JoAnn's.

In long arming most quilters want the quilt to come from them and really don't want a label on their work of art to include us.. Some do. I had digitized a grasshopper as that has become my nickname and put it in the extra area to the side of a Quilt of Valor I was doing for a local guild just to test the pattern. The ladies saw that and made a label out of it for that quilt and said they all want a grasshopper now, just in case I ever get famous or something! Ha Ha. So now I stitch a grasshopper in the outer edge of all my jobs and they can fold it in at the corner and bind it inside or make the label out of it.Some want a really small grasshopper stitched in the outer edge of the top camouflaged in an area that's hard to see.

Several of our clients do want labels made with little sayings, the date, and who it is for, and even us sometimes. It's getting more and more a part of the long arming as they want it sewn in to the pattern. I guess some quilt thieves have started peeling off the labels and replacing them with their own--terrible but true-- so if its sewn in the quilt tops quilting that makes it much more difficult for this to happen. My quilts are always for family or friends. I just sign my name BJ and the year it was finished in the back of the binding.

I most definitely do put a label on each quilt. If one of my quilts happens to last 100 years and one of my descendents owns it, I certainly want them to know at least a little about the person who made it. I always put my name, my town, and the year, but sometimes add information on who the quilt was made for and/or the occasion. As I'm not really fond of the actual quilting process, I also give credit if someone other than me quilts it. Each and every quilt deserves a label which tells something about the person who gave of themselves in making it.

I always put two labels on the back, in the 2 bottom corners
1. My name, when and where it was made
2. Name of quilt (if it has one), for whom made (if I know that) from whom, if not me; sometimes a greeting
e.g.: Happy Birthday

I label all my quilts except baby quilts. I put "name of quilt" Made for _____ by his/her mother/grandmother/sisterinlaw/cousin etc my name, then the month and year and if it's quilted by somebody else I add at the bottom of the label "professionally quilted by soandso."

I don't label baby quilts because little kids have a tendency to pick at things and might pull it loose.

I use white muslin and cut it half an inch bigger all the way around than a piece of Wonder Under. After the WU is fused then I write my label with a fabric pen. I turn the edges under and fuse it to my quilt and then do an inivisble stitch around the edges.
