Do You Let Your Pets in Your Sewing Room and, If You Do, How Do They Help?

Bess always has to lay on a freshly finished quilt. She is my judge and jury when it comes to a comfortable quilt. She has done this since she was a puppy and she is now 8 years old. She also naps close by me. Not too close or I'd break my neck - she's 84 lbs. I don't have a sewing room, I have a sewing area, which faces to an east window. Best place in the house (four room house). We have a little bungalow built in 1921. Such a sweet home for my husband, Bess and me! Edie

It's nice to hear a cat owner who restricts their cat away from sewing projects. I took our guild quilt to the LA'er yesterday. If it had been my quilt, I'd have left with my quilt as fast as I could. She tried once to get the cat off our finished top, but it kept coming back to where she was discussing our project. It's a good thing she's an excellent longarmer!! I was not happy with the scene.

My sewing room is in the basement and the dogs don't go down there. But I have put a sewing machine in an upstairs room. The Rottie won't come in the room, but the Dane comes in and goes back out. My dogs have rules to follow. They know they are not allowed in the kitchen at mealtime, and know they are not allowed around any of my sewing. Any animal can be trained to know what NO means. A lot of people have pet allergies and/or just plain don't like animals in the house. I don't allow the dogs around my charity quilts, even though I wash them before delivery, I try very hard to keep animal hair away from them. There are also a lot of dangers in a sewing room. I am rather paranoid about pins on the floor; don't want the dogs stepping on them. Cats being so inquisitive should not be in a sewing room.

I have a beautiful Bengal cat who is now 16 and he is devasted if he cannot be where ever I am lol he tells me loudly (they are a very vocal breed) if he is not happy! We have decided that until Charlie has inspected the work and the quilts they are not 'real' quilts! lol

I have three cats and love when I'm in there and they join me. That being said, I have had cats for 34 years, love them dearly, and have in the last year given in to wool applique. I fought getting into this because I just didn't need another fixation. Boy, do I love it. Anyway, my newest cat, he's a year and a half just LOVES and I mean LOVES to eat my wool. He also eats shoelaces down to the nub too but he just made swiss cheese out of a $34 piece of hand dyed wool. Still, I let them in, just have to keep my wool locked up. LOL
