I use both as that was the way I was taught. Things seem to line up ok.

I use both. I laid the ruler over the matt and the lines matched up so I know they are the same.

I was taught to use rulers. Sometimes the fabric is just too large, then I will attempt to line it up with the mat lines.

I use both, but most of the time I use the mat. It is what I started out doing. Old habits die hard, as they say.I think either way is fine.

I think as long as everything is measured by the same method, it will work.

My teacher told me the lines on the mat are not precise.
