I always measure with my cutting mat. It is the way I learned years ago. I only use my rulers to cut a straight line. I've never noticed any trouble.
    Am I in the minority?
My cutting mats (3 of them) are turned over to the smooth side and I use rulers exclusively.

When I was taught to quilt, I was taught to use the mat to make sure that the fabric was laid out straight and then use the SAME ruler throughout the one project. Between rulers there could be inaccuracies so if you start cutting with one ruler, continue to cut with that ruler.

I don't think there are any rules in regard to that-- it's like cutting the fabric: which side of the ruler do you cut on: with the piece you need on the right or left edge of the ruler?

To me, the only thing that would make a difference on my question is whether you were right or left handed or what felt most comfortable-- there are no rules for this which is why it is fun . . . and addicting!

I use my ruler, but have heard that you should do your whole quilt with the same ruler.

I use both but whichever one I start with that is the one I use all the way through.

I do it exactly the same as you and never had any problems, but I'm betting we're in the minority.....

I use mat to lay out and ruler to measure and cut. As long as you are consistant there should not be any problem. I tell my students to use the same brand of rulers; whichever brand you prefer.

That's what I do also. There was once a topic on here that one should always use the same measuring devise when cutting fabric because they vary slightly. I checked all my rulers and mats and the measurements are identical.

Yes, I always use my mat and ruler. I work on the principle that as long as I use the same tools, if they are inaccurate then all the cuts are inaccurate by the same amount and they will fit together just fine and on they....they do.
