I use both my mat and my rulers... I have consistent results everytime, which I believe is the most important thing when cutting and then piecing fabric.

Me too...and I found that my cutting accuracy improved when I switched to this technique.

I use the lines on the mat to measure but I don't necessarily always start at the one inch line, this helps to keep the mat from getting such deep grooves over time. I only use my rulers as a straight edge and the lines on it as a way to check to make sure that my cutting line is squared on the fabric. Funny, I can't even envision how you would measure with rulers only.

I had started out doing that, as what else are the lines on the mat for???

But then I read the Sally Collins piecing book and she is now looking over my shoulder when I cut...LOL... so I just use the mat to double-check my lines and lineup or rough-measure.

I did check my Fiskars 24x36 mat for accuracy and it is off just under 1/8 in 24" compared to my Omnigrids.

I learned using a ruler but I now see the the cutting mat would be good for large lengths of fabric.

I line up my fabric on the lines on the mat. Then to cut strips etc, I line up the lines on the ruler and the mat. They all seem to match so far!! :D Ann

I used the mat for all my flannel squares and cut right through it. So much for self healing. But I moved to a different start place and I am still using it. Made a big rut in my dining room table, it is a good thing it was distressed to begin with....I cried anyway. But quilting is more important.

Good way to get longer usage of your mat too! I have one mat that's starting to get grooves in some areas. I was going to buy new, but now I'll just flip the mat over.
