I always measure with my cutting mat. It is the way I learned years ago. I only use my rulers to cut a straight line. I've never noticed any trouble.
    Am I in the minority?
I use the lines on the mat for measurement.

I use both, check my ruler with the mat, then cut away.

I've always used my mat, and wondered why some folks only use a ruler, so I asked this question at a quilt show - a fellow was demonstrating cutting mats and cutters, he said most mats are not accurate, but naturally his was. I didn't by the mat, but checked my olfa out once I got home. It works fine for me, and now - thanks to this board, it's even better since I'm using Best Press to lightly starch my fabric, that's made the world of difference in my projects!

I use the mat lines for a close guess, but for right-on I use the rulers.

I was taught that Omnigrip/Omnigrid mats and rulers are guaranteed to be the same measurement. I may be wrong. That's just what I was told at my first class. BUT. . . . I have since learned there are other ruler/mat companies. Silly me!

WHATEVER YOU USE, JUST BE CONSISTENT THROUGH AN ENTIRE CUTTING PROCESS

That's my logic also. It will be consistanty wrong and will work out in the long run.

I use rulers when cutting smaller pieces but larg squares I don't have a ruler for I'll use the lines on the cutting mat.
