However, would it be okay to stitch in the ditch on the outside border which is all squares and triangles ( about 18 inches all around)??? Thank you for your input.
Of course it is okay! The quilt I made for our first grandchild is a very simple quilt that I machine quilted a diagonal grid on and then did hearts in the borders, I consider it a little extra love from grandma!
Lots of people do both on their quilts.

both. if the quilt has lots of fabrics/patterns then machine since the hand quilting doesn't show up, or if the quilt is going to get heavy use-machine.
I have a Barnett Laptop Hoop that spins-it's great for hand quilting and on certain quilts nothing finishes a top or creates the patterns of light and dark like hand quilting.

I piece and attach with the machine -- small projects are machine quilted, but the big ones are handquilted -- however, some of my quilts were made using the lapquilt method (blocks are pieced, batted, and quilted and then attached to each other) and are done on the machine

Hand quilting for little bitty projects that the long arm quilter won't do. Nearly everything else goes to her. froggyintexas

I quilt by hand. I Love the look it gives when you are finished.. I have tried to machine quilt a few times but never really liked the look.
