If we don't support our local merchants, we soon be towns without brick and mortor stores. Real book stores are becoming a thing of the past because of places like Amazon. try to support your LQS.

I try to visit my locol shop here in the lowcountry of S.C but I have only one beside Hancocks. (Idon't care for most of their fabrics) I don;t know if Hancocks has second and third runs and are selling them as if they were discounted.

In Oregon we don't have sales tax.....they just hit us with state tax at the end of the year.

I would like to say I buy locally and support the local shops but one in town is so drab and most of the people are miserable.. it's like going to a morgue sometimes. Snobbish and boring is how I really think of them and then the other smaller shop is pretty friendly, bright, cheery and fun to visit but limited on what she has to offer...

fabric.com is in my state (Georgia), so yep, I have to pay tax. But with free shipping, and a coupon code, it makes up for it. :)

Our local quilt store was poorly managed and went out of business. We do have a Walmart that carries some fabric, but has a limited selection. The closest fabric store is an hour and a half away, so I buy most of my fabric online from a vendor that offers free shipping. I don't have to pay the tax, but that's not why I shop there; they have the best selection, and will take stuff back if I don't like it.

I live in Oregon. We don't have sales tax so it is not an issue here.

Well, I live in Oregon so we don't pay sales tax anyway. :mrgreen: I usually try to buy fabric from my LQS. I'm just starting to buy fabric from the people who sell it here on this board.

guilt isn't going to work. Indie shops are going to have to figure out new ways of getting customers. Local booksellers will not be able to compete with Amazon or borders. No reason they can't get a good portion of their profits from used books, or other ways.
