Do you sew with friends?
#11
I do weekly for years now but like you mention time spend quilting goes down. I also ended up being the "teacher" even though I did not want it. Often times they just need friend time and we sit and talk. It is OK. It is only one evening a week and I can sew all the other ones on my own. We always meet at my house as I have the woman cave which is what you seem to have too. I did end up being the one that provides food and wine most of the time but some bring goodies now too. This is also the small group I go to quilt shows with and do other quilt activities like visiting quilt shops. Maybe set a time frame and try it?

I do it every Tuesday and love it. I get out and socialize. I bring my lunch and sometimes something for the hostess. I do use her electricity, iron and board and even at times her LA machine. we have a good time. sometimes it's mindless work, other times we help each other. we work along side each other and have fun. I look forward to it, because I also know I have to plan something to get it done.

I have done it on several occasions. The first one, my friend had a big room added on to her house for another purpose but eventually it became her sewing room. I used one of her machines and we worked on our own projects and visited. I brought my own lunch. Then, as it does, times change, and I don't do that anymore. Another friend would come to my house and use one of my machines. That was fun. We both got out of the habit, not the friendship. Right now we are in transition in that we are putting this house on the market and moving to a different state where there is a quilt shop two miles away and I will have my own quilting room (one of the bedrooms) and in the basement a workbench that is already there, so I can tinker with my vintage machines.
I also like to sew alone, but, would be open to having a new friend come over and sew with me sometimes. I do have enough machines or she could bring her own.
What I don't like to do, and have done enough to know, is drag a project and machine to a "sew in" or "sew along". I don't like all that packing up and unpacking and then repacking and bringing home.
The quilt shop near the new house offers a lot of classes so I think I will be open minded and give that a try and hope I make some friends.

I get together with 4 friends every Thursday. We start at a local coffee shop at 8:30 for sustenance then go to J's home. We quilt in her basement. We leave our machines set up, any projects that we will work on there. We break for lunch and sew til about 3:00. It is so nice to have each other to bounce ideas off, get help with color choices, patterns, etc. One member has a Go that she leaves their and we all buy dies. We recently replaced the large cutting mat for J. There are days I don't get any of my quilting done, but what joy to be able to help another quilter.

Thanks everyone for your comments & suggestions. I think I will give it a try......you've made it sound like fun and I've just got to remember I might not get as much done as when I'm by myself....but it's good to be with friends. It sounds like many folks do this....so I'll give it a whirl...........Thanks!

I think it sounds like fun, but I couldn't have anyone over to my house to sew. Its just not set up for it. I do go to the LQS and sew once a month and I enjoy that. But I agree not as much gets accomplished

We get together weekly. Each brings her own project and does her own thing...with help from whomever,if needed. I do have to clean the house some...none of us sees real well...I enjoy putting on a pot of soup or making a salad. It's about friendship.
