I have always cut my dogears off. When I made the California King, each one of my dogears matched with those on the other square. Some I had loped off and some I did not. The 'did not' made a larger and harder nub to sew through or around. I broke a zillion needles and just about ruined my poor little machine. I won't skip that step the next time. I wanted to know if it would make any difference and now I know. It also bothers me that my square doesn't look all square and nice with the dogears.

Yup, I'm a trimmer, and a square up kind of gal, too. Did not used to be, but my quilts are better now. The devil is in the details.

    The easy answer: YES.

I sew my HSTs oversize so I trim mine on all sides which makes them uniform in size and square. Much easier to assemble.

So you cut the initial fabric bigger so you can trim it down to size after its sewn together? If so how much bigger 1/8"? I am having such a hard time making my squares 12 1/2" I always end up 12 1/4" before squaring them up more like 12 even squared.

It depends on the block I am making. Sometimes it is better to leave it for a better match up.. But, If they are all hst's I would.

Absolutely trim them. Your seams will be easier to match up and will lay flatter. I always make sure to back stitch the beginning and the end when sewing the pieces together. If I don't, the stitches will come out of the end when I trim them. I actually trim them as soon as I sew each piece. I should try sewing them all at once then trimming.
