I would square this up to make sure it will be the right size before I sew any more. Nothing like sewing 100 of these to find out I cut them wrong. Also, trimming and squaring up will give you less bulk when you put it together with the other blocks. Good luck!

I remember watching a Fons and Porter show and they were talking about how they used to keep the "dog-ears" in a little jar to see if they could fill the jar. I thought about that, but I get so busy and so "wrapped up" in my work I forget to do that. Besides in my own little space here, I just let the stuff, threads, puzels, etc., fall to the floor and when I am done I just pull out the vacuum and clean it all up. It works for me! Edie

A puzel is a German word that came from my great Grandmother in Germany. It is the little bits and pieces, threads and stuff that is cut off from the block. It is pronounced Poozle. I had my brother in law make a puzel jar for my mother (the quilter) for Christmas one year. (He is a potter). She set it on her sewing table and dropped the little dog ears, thread and stuff, aka puzels in the jar and kept her sewing area nice and clean. My sewing area is nice and clean too, except for the floor. Edie

I can't sew anything to the size its suppose to be so I have found if I make bigger, and trim down. I get a square block, so yes I trim the dog ears. Nice block by the way, would love to see what its used in.

I sew my HSTs oversize so I trim mine on all sides which makes them uniform in size and square. Much easier to assemble.

This is exactly how I do it too. ;)

I do trim, but that is because I always "square up" the blocks before sewing them together, this automatically trims off the "ears". I always do this so that my project is not katter-wonkey at the end.

so you square up these little blocks before they go into a bigger block? Up till now Ive been putting them together and squaring up at the end. They are always too small BTW. I'm very new to quilting and sewing any advice will be helpful. thanks
