I trim dog ears, square up at each step, snip away loose threads, iron... All nice and neat before I move on. A freind asked my how come the back on my top was so neat, and this is why. I'd rather do it as I go than have to tidy it up when I'm done. By that point, I'm generally ready to have a project out of my hands and don't want to take the time to neaten it.

Joe, please take the time to check your seams...if you are consistently ending up with blocks that are too small then you are consistently taking too big a seam or consistently initially cutting your pieces too small. Even a quarter inch foot is no guarantee...your needle may be set a bit to the left of the foot's measure. Pressing is also of great importance...even thread size can effect accuracy. I've learned the hard way on most of my own issues.....hope this helps you get the results you want. Happy stitchin' to ya! Oops....meant to add that you are to be applauded for being consistent....not everyone can get the same result everytime...and then it's even more difficult to correct and/or improve!

I sew my HSTs oversize so I trim mine on all sides which makes them uniform in size and square. Much easier to assemble.
This is the way I do it to. It's easier to get the the correct size if I trim them especially the 7/8" cuts. I just go up to the next full inch. To me it's more timely but a better finish.

I agree. I used to trim to the SMALLEST square and just have smaller blocks. Then I learned to do the above and get much better results. This doesn't mean I don't ever have to "fudge" it. No perfection here.
