My grandmother was a quilter and a recycler..for summer quilts she would use old sheets so there was a hint of padding.. but not much.. for fall there were "sheet blankets" that were used.. harder to find nowadays they were like adult receiving blankets. and for winter quilts she would use heavy bats the weight of those depended on if it was a quilt or a comforter. So.. as you see, you can use nearly anything.

I like those for quilts, they are easy to quilt thru, and hold up to most anything.

For summer weight quilts, I've use hospital blankets...the woven cotton ones. My MIL had tons of them from multiple hospital stays, and when she moved last time, I ended up with ALL of them!

If you are wanting to practice, even fabric with towels in the center would work. After you fill up all of the spaces, they can be cut into potholders, hot pads, etc... and bound

I have a friend who often uses blankets from a thrift store for batting. She loves it.

I have gotten blankets and mattress pads from resale stores such as goodwill or salvation army. Sometimes you can get them really cheap.
