when you are sewing pieces together and as you start out have you ever had the first edge of the material go down in the bobbin? well using a leader material helps that not to happen, get a scrap fabric, sew on it first and when you get to the end of the material put the actual piece of the quilt you are going to sew right behind it so that it is the next material to go under the needle and sew right from the leader fabric skip a little space and then on to the quilt piece then after you are done sewing all the "chains" of fabric you want , go back and cut the thread that connects all the fabric pieces, and they then become individual pieces i hope this explains it for you if not PM me

Bonnie Hunter is the advocate of not just using a "scrap" of fabric, but to have a stack of cut squares (mine are 2 1/2" or whatever you might want to start later) and use those as your leaders and enders...thus working on two things at once....conserving thread and saving the triangle points from getting eaten by the sewing machine......somewhere she has a video on all the quilts she had done this way..I'm someone here will have that info

Always after I kept getting that bunch of thread when I started and I watched Fons and Porter on the Create TV station and noticed that they did that (Fons explained it to her daughter) when patching.

I use a leader all the time. I have a little bucket next to my sewing machine full of tiny scraps.

Sometimes, if I don't use the featherweight but I have a long doll needle to hold fabric where I want it. Don't use leaders or pins very often unless using another machine.
