Always!!! I have 2&1/2 inch blocks that I use and have enough to make a scrappy Irich Chain. When I need to I just sew them together and leave them in the machine until I am ready to sew again. So I guess my are 'enders' lol! I also make small pinwheels this way to use in quilts.

If you sew a lot it also saves thread.

Not exactly sure exactly what a leader is, but I use a folded over scrap of fabric at the beginning and ending of each piecing/chain of piecing. Yes, holding the thread would do the same. But this keeps all the loose threads that you would normally have to trim on the scrap of fabric. It is faster than pulling up the bobbin thread and holding the top and bobbin threads. I think it may also use less thread.

    Just my opinion.

I have always held my threads. That is what I was taught in school.

I also use a straight stitch plate whenever possible and this really helps.
I use a leader, really helps. Ms Grace [or anyone who wants to respond :D] I have read about using a straight stitch plate, but usually don't. Why does this help?

I have used leaders for as long as I can remember. I always use them when I'm piecing. I find that it saves thread and also saves me the trouble of remembering to clip the starting and ending thread tails.

On the straight stitch plate, the hole that the needle goes down into, is very small. Just the right size for the needle.
It keeps fabric from being pulled down into the hole & bunching up.
