I use a sliver of white soap to mark my dark fabric. It usually brushes right off before I even finish quilting the whole design. Can use with a stencil really easily. Just make sure your sliver is thin.

I used it once, also. Luckily I used it on top of a printed on paper pattern [thanks to my printer.] I never used it totally with quilting as a friend told me of the problems she had with the pieces of it under her quilting stitches.

I do use Quilter's Preview Paper from HandiQuilter. It isn't paper, but is vinyl that you can draw on to see what design you might want to use. It has a marked order so you don't draw on your quilt. This will give you guidelines in your mind for your quilting.

If you want to quilt over something, then use Golden Threads paper. It removes easily enough & will wash out if any left.

Wash away stabilizer is also good but more expensive.

I tried it once as a practice but haven't tried on a large project. I'll remember to not use a sharpie tho!

Can't find it around her anymore. Not t Costco or Sams club and none of the grocery stores or big box stores like Walmart or Target have it.

I used it only once...that was enough....had a hard time getting it all off the quilt. Sounded like a great idea at the time, just didn't work for me.

Several people have commented about markings showing through once quilted. I now use Frixion Ball Erasable Black Gel Pens by Pilot. After sewing (could be something as simple as a seam you've marked or an X on a square ora complex design), simply iron over it. The markings instantly, and I do mean instantly, disappear. Other colors are available, except, alas, white. These are available on Amazon. (Note: There is a similar Frixion pen by Pilot, but it is not the same as the one listed above, so be careful to get exactly this particuar one. I just love these pens!
