    Hard to get a really good look at the needle in the video but it looks very much like a shoemaker's leather needle. Leather needles were (and probably still are) made in various sizes and thicknesses for use on different parts of the shoe.
    I'm sure a curved upholstery needle would work just fine.

    Wal-mart also has a package of needles with one of these neddles in it.

    several years ago I bought curved needles from

    At that time they had differant thicknesses , Found them very usful when making boxes.
