So if it is for family, friends, charity, self or utility, I see no problem. But I would certainly take the extra time and effort if it was for a show or a special project like QoV.
I have always taken pride in my workmanship so I always use a separate fabric for my binding. It could match the border or be an accent. The quilt tells me what it wants. Even for charity quilts, I want to make the quilt look it's best that I can. I don't mind the hand stitching to the back even though sometimes it is quite painful.

Separate binding for me - I just like the contrast it adds.

I've always used a separate fabric for the binding.

I do all three, it just depends on what I feel looks right. Sometimes I add an extra border on the quilt top and then when it comes time to quilt it, decide it looks better without that extra border so I fold that over for binding. Sometimes I fold the back forward. Sometimes separate. It depends on the quilt, and some days it just depends on if I want to get the quilt finished and done with LOL.

I do the self-binding by bringing the back fabric to the front most of the time. Even if I do separate binding, I use the sewing machine. Hand sewing and I don't get along at all!

that sounds just like me, made a round baby quilt and had to make binding of all different fabrics I used for the circle, but turned out good.

I think a separate binding wears better.

I tried machine sewing binding down and it didn"t turn out good, so I hand sew mine.
