I don't make show quilts, I make quilts for family and friends and they could not care less if the binding is separate or the backing turned to binding. If done correctly, it is just as long lasting as individual binding, IMHO.

I really like the flange idea. I'm making one right now that would benefit from that. I'll see if I have time when I get to that part. Trying to meet a deadline here.

The only quilts that I folded the backing to the front were miniatures. I should try it on something bigger. Then I wouldn't have to stop and watch a video of how to join the two ends together when I stitch a separate binding on! LOL
I enjoy hand sewing the binding down on the back of the quilt too. Some of my quilts are done with a different color than the back and some match the backing. Right or wrong? I don't care! I love the process.

I do this especially with smallish quilts that I make for project Linus.
They are usually 50ish by 60 ish
I sandwich and pin, then trim the batting about a half inch larger than the top, and the backing a two or three inches larger than the batting. Then I turn the back under twice and pin to the front, probably just like you did!.
Then I can sew down the "binding" before I actually tie the quilt.
