This is what I do also...I like the contrast showing on front and back of the quilt.

It would depend on what I was making. If I want it quick and simple then I use the back, if I want it to be something a little more special then I use a binding fabric.

Most of my bindings are separate bindings that include adding a flange of a different colour, which I really like. It just adds a nice pop of colour as a finishing touch.

I don't make show quilts, I make quilts for family and friends and they could not care less if the binding is separate or the backing turned to binding. If done correctly, it is just as long lasting as individual binding, IMHO.

I really like the flange idea. I'm making one right now that would benefit from that. I'll see if I have time when I get to that part. Trying to meet a deadline here.

The only quilts that I folded the backing to the front were miniatures. I should try it on something bigger. Then I wouldn't have to stop and watch a video of how to join the two ends together when I stitch a separate binding on! LOL
I enjoy hand sewing the binding down on the back of the quilt too. Some of my quilts are done with a different color than the back and some match the backing. Right or wrong? I don't care! I love the process.

I use the backing folded over for binding when I use fleece as the backing on baby quilts. It's easy once you figure out corners!

I do this especially with smallish quilts that I make for project Linus.
They are usually 50ish by 60 ish
I sandwich and pin, then trim the batting about a half inch larger than the top, and the backing a two or three inches larger than the batting. Then I turn the back under twice and pin to the front, probably just like you did!.
Then I can sew down the "binding" before I actually tie the quilt.

I have always chosen a separate binding but now you've captured my interested in trying one using the backing.

I've done both and enjoy both.
I have been purchasing contrasting fabric for my project bundles for a while now, and you have
reminded me I don't have to do that all the time. thanks
