I do both also. It depends on how much excess backing fabric I have. For quilts that I enter in the fair and that go to the Bible Camp quilt auction, I always use a separate binding. Both methods look good when done neatly and with mitered corners, and both can look sloppy if done badly.

For baby or small toddler quilt, I will fold over...any other quilt, I attach a binding. I think a separate binding in a diff color from the border makes the quilt look "finished"

I like to use the excess backing of the quilt on baby quilts or lap quilts .. UNLESS its for a special person then I use binding ...

I always make a separate binding. I used to sew it to the front and hand stitch to the back. Lately, I found that I can make a great looking binding by sewing to the back, flipping to the front and machine stitching very close to the edge of the binding. I have to think that would be stronger than the hand stitching. It does leave a row of machine stitching exposed on the backing, but with many quilts, you hardly notice. I use different color threads top and back, if needed. If absolutely necessary, I hand stitch, but I hate every minute of it. I tried the "bidding your quilt farewell" theory, but it just doesn't work for me. I just finished one queen and two twin quilts, and if I had to hand stitch them, I would have three UFOs.

I always do a separate binding, , machine sewn to the front folded and hand sewn to the back. I find the hand sewing part quite theraputic, sad person that I am.

I use separate binding. While using excess backing is a thrifty thing to do, I think using a separate binding is actually easier to apply so that it looks nice. Also, the binding can be a design element, so unless I want the backing as the binding, I would always use a separate binding.

I like separate binding for me, but it's a matter if personal preference. Do what YOU like!
