    Default Does anybody do this?

Hi, was wondering if most quilters put a un attached binding around the outsides of their quilts or if you do what I do most of the time and use the excess backing or excess front as binding? It sure goes a lot faster. Such as this one.

The first quilt I ever made used excess backing as binding. That quilt lasted well for 30 years, until a puppy got hold of it.

most of the time I excess the backing around for the binding. Just now I'm having to rebind a quilt that I made 25 years ago with the backing as binding.

I usually use another fabric for binding & can't remember ever folding over. How do you do that? Press over & under? Would be a lot faster!

I have tried using excess backing to wrap around but it was for a Lutheran World Relief quilt. I didn't spend enough time to learn how to do the corners just right. I like to use separate binding. I really do enjoy the hand sewing at the end, too.

    i've only made one
i used a separate binding, but it was made from the same fabric as the backing. these are the things that happen when you're new and cut things before thinking them through.

next time, i'll be using the backing.

I think it is a preference. However our guild is donating to Quilts of Valor for our service folks, and there are several hard and fast rules. Separate binding is one of them. And I am not that experienced, but I have been paying attention, and all the quilts that win ribbons in the shows I have been to have separate binding.

So if it is for family, friends, charity, self or utility, I see no problem. But I would certainly take the extra time and effort if it was for a show or a special project like QoV.
