does anyone know how to use excel for quilting?

Quilt Wizard is a great inexpensive intro version of EQ and very handy. I have used Quilt Wizard for a couple of years and now feel like EQ would be a worthwhile investment for me. Was not ready for the expanded features of EQ when I got Quilt Wizard.

I have Electric Quilt and even tho I'm not too knowledgeable yet, I love the things I can do. You can even import your own fabric into the system. But I really like the idea of seeing a quilt in different colors to see which one looks the best. It has a large library of quilt blocks, fabrics, applique templates. I can also print the block for paper piecing, which is what I am using on my civil war Love letter wuilt. I know there is a lot more to learn about it, I just haven't made the time to do it. I love it.

No, never thought of using Excel. Now my hubby plays in Excel and Paint all the time. I occasionally use EQ. I think I will get him to design something for me because I know it takes hours of computer time--when would I have time to sew?

I use excel to design my quilts. At least the ones that have only squares to them. It's easier to use it than it is to do them by hand on graph paper as far as changing the colors. I can't afford any other program yet, so use what I can.
I also figure out how much fabric I will need of each color (Another con on excel is it's all in solid colors) as I have a chart I also use that tells me how many particular size squares I can get in a yard of fabric.

I haven't tried Excel, but use Publisher to do some designing, especially paper piecing designs. Advantage of Publisher is that you can reduce/enlarge the design to the size you want.
I love LucyintheSky's idea of using fabric swatches from websites to see how they go together! How clever is that?
You could also take photos of fabrics already on hand and upload to the computer to use for designing.
