I found a bunch of these completed blocks (enough for a full size quilt) in some totes of fabric from an estate sale. But I have not found the name of the block, and I have not found a layout I particularly like. Do any of you know this block name. I have searched online and in a book that I have of old blocks, but have not come up with anything. [img]20240719_092633 (1) HST quilt block[/img]

Those are called half square triangles and are one of the easiest block to do. Use google for the block to find instructions.

Yes, I know they are half square triangles, but what has me baffled is the layout of the blocks. I have googled HST blocks but came up with nothing as far as layout. I have tried laying them out in a chevron pattern, but the way the blocks are constructed makes so there is no point on one side of the chevron.

Do you mean the bottom right corner of the photo? It looks like damage, not an intentional piecing choice (unless that corner is explicitly cut - maybe to piece in a triangle to complete it, then create a square/diamond where 4 of those blocks would come together?)

I agree with MKC that the lower right corners are damaged.

You can restore them by sewing a triangle on in the "stitch and flip" way, then press and trim that corner to make the blocks square. This will make a very fun and pretty secondary design.

You could go just with that and use a colour that is similar to what is already in the blocks, or some big contrast for that little corner.

Are they all with the same fabrics or scrappy? Wonder how it would look on point with an alternating plain block? I don’t have a computer program anymore to try it out for you, sorry.

You might set them like this. This is made up of just the HST blocks, no alternating blocks.

Smetimes with blocks like that, there is no "right" way to set them.

Some people just lay them out on a bed or on the floor and play with them for a bit. Then take pictures of the layouts one likes (or sort of likes) and then try something else.

Sort of like log cabin blocks. Lay them out one way - and one gets one effect. Lay them out another way, and then another secondary design appears.
