I have used with sucess a sliver of dried soap. It does not rub out as you quilt and after words you can wipe it off. I use black material and it works for me.

If you are doing straight lines, I use a tracing wheel
with no teeth and a straight edge. It usually works
    for me. Brenda W

soapstone works well, but I found a chalk at Jo-anns that doesn't come off when FMQ, I need to go back and purchace, one of my quilt buddies bought one and I've used it--works great, even tried rubbing it off with my finger and it did not come off. Yellow package w/7 white calk sticks and a veriety of other colors for 14.99 refills were 7.99.

Soap slivers stay put and help the needle slip through material and washes out!

I use a sliver of soap. Comes out easy with a damp cloth or let it wear off or wash your quilt
