Does anyone quilt faces?
#1
My mother started a landscape quilt from a photo of my daughter on a trip to Maui. She has done a great job on the quilt but it has been sitting there for years waiting for a face. She has tried but cannot get it right. She needs someone to help out. If there is anyone who could make the face so this quilt can finally be done, we would greatly appreciate it.

Have you checked out Bonnie McCaffrey's book? I am doing a quilt for our guild challenge and am painting the face by going through her book! Also a couple of years ago, I did a quilt using Charlotte Warr Andersen's technique and was really pleased with the outcome. It is an applique technique.

I am thinking that she is doing a landscape quilt so she does not need a lot of facial detail. Check this book out - - "When Quilters Gather" by Ruth B. McDowell. Hopefully here is a link to that book on Amazon.com where you can see the front cover and some of the pages from the book. Maybe that will give her some ideas.

When I took figure drawing classes in college, my prof. asked me all the time, "Where is the head? Why doesn't this person have a head?" I just couldn't ever get the face right. I loved all the veins in hands and feet, but faces just weren't happening! So listen to the other ladies. I am no help at all! LOL! I still made a B in the class. Might have gotten a higher grade if I hadn't cut the heads off.

Thanks for the replies. We have tried printing the face on fabric and it never looks right. Part of the problem is that the original photo is slightly blurry. We have tried using raw edge applique. We just don't have what it takes to do this.

I would like to know the size you are trying to make it to.
dime size would be harder to do than say softball size. I would like to help as far as I can. you can see some of my work on the threads I started.
