I made a bag for my sister and she said she liked it better than VB.
The pattern is called 10 Strip Wonder Bag and I used Bali Pops.

I bought McCall's pattern 4118 on sale for $.99 that has 4 styles on it. I then bought pre-quilted, reversible fabric at Joann Fabrics with a 50% off coupon, so I made my purse for $20 and am very happy with it. Joann's has some lovely reversible pre-quilted fabric, some of which looks very similar to Vera Bradley. The McCall's pattern also has instructions for quilting non-quilted fabric, or you could piece fabric before making if you wanted. Hope this helps.

I recently took an Amy Butler bag class. After I bought the book/pattern, the fabric, the interfacing etc, and the cost of the class, the bag cost me $85. Now if I take out the $25 book, and the class, it's still a $40 bag. It was the Everyday Shopper bag, which is a really big bag and reversible, so that add to the cost. I liked that I could customize the pockets to suit my likes though. Not making another bag anytime soon. A lot of work!
All mine are backpack style purses since they serve my purpose best.

Why copy a mass produced bag when there are so many beautiful patterns and fabric in our world?
I like to make bags but it is not cheap. Fabric ,patterns ,fusible fleece, buttons, zippers and 6-8 hours. In time does not add up to inexpensive. I enjoy the process. One of a kind!

I can't seem to find fabrics that look like hers. No Hobby Lobbies near me, and haven't seen anything like VB fabrics around here. I make bags, and often get compliments when I carry them, but cost and time required makes it not worth selling them.

Lots of free patterns online.
Also try using upholstery fabric and heavy duty interfacing to make it firmer.
It seems she uses a lot of paisely.
