You bet! Except for really, really, really, special quilts (weddings, anniversaries, etc) The more its washed, the better it feels. Additionally, shows off quilting (like a reversible or whole cloth quilt) AND like you said, with the price of cotton......

I really like to use muslin since I love the way it shows the quilting on the back of the quilt. And now it comes in not just the natural, bleached and teadyed, it also comes in florals and other tone on tone "prints". So very soft on the back of a quilt.

I use muslin, but the better quality. I buy it by the bolt with a coupon from Joann's and then I have lots for several quilts. I also like the wide width so I don't have seams. You can dye it if you don't want white or cream..... Just set the dye when finished. I also use it in the front for applique because it has a nice dense weave. It wears well for me!
