Don't keep it in the sun and every time you wash it add a bit of vinegar to the water.

I would use a charcoal gray. It might not fade as much as black. And if it does fade, it started out gray and will still be gray.

Would a mottled black work for this project? Or a tone-on-tone black print? You would still get the dark color but any fading would be less obvious. This principle works for any dark color choice. I use a lot of navy or very dark blues like this and have been very pleased with the look.

Yes black fades, and as someone else said, different blacks fade at different rates even if they start out looking the same. 19 years ago, I made a quilt for my DGD with a lot of black and brights - Amish style. Didn't use the same black fabric throughout. The blacks faded at different rates. Wish I had a picture to show - it's quite startling.

Just a note Sythropol does not set dyes , it only removes excess and keeps them from setting on surrounding fabrics( it keeps the dye in suspention and in solution) . Retayne sets dyes. .. but Retayne does make the fabrics more suseptable to fading from exposure to direct sunlight.

Test it!!! Take a few of the fabrics and lay them out where they will be in the sun, for a few days. Then take some and run them thru the wash like you will the quilt. This will tell you how they will react to sun and detergents. Jan

I'm right now working on a black and white quilt that has solid black borders. I too was worried about the black fading or turning purple or reddish. I ordered the amish black out of the Keepsake Quilt catalog and it looks really good. It has a true, deep black color and is a little heavier than regular quilt cotton. It sewed real well too.

I always use Kona Cotton for solid black.

Nineteen years ago the dyes and coloring processes were quite different than they are today. That's not to say different brands of black fabric today are all identical by a long shot, but I don't believe modern fabrics fade anywhere near as much as they used to even twenty years ago.
