It scrunch it very tight and begin at the center. It can only get easier from there.

Just a domestic machine with a slightly bigger work area. My local quilt shop owner has told me about using a big wooden hoop and quilt a little at a time.

No, I don't have a long arm. I would love to have one, but room for one is the issue (as well as the price!). I FMQ on my Juki and most of my stitch in the ditch quilting on an old Pfaff I pulled out of my storage building a couple of months ago.

I rent time on a longarm at a local store - rental time is very reasonable and someone on hand to teach the method. Worth investigating in your area even if you need to drive a little.

I wish I had a longarm, but am doing mine on my regular sewing machine. As soon as we know where we are going, hubby is making me a makeshift one to use with my 33 year old Kenmore for free motion quilting.

No longarm for me but I have considered one. (smiling here but the dollar signs are choking me) I have a Bernina820 with a larger throat and do a lot of free motion quilting. I also use the walking foot for cross-hatching charity quilts on both the 820 and my little Bernina820. I recently sold my 440QE which was one super machine and probably would have kept it had the throat been larger. A very old Riccoh sits in the closet for when the old-time-fever hits me.
