Yes, I check this all the time with my threads. Thanks for the picture as it is very good. When you put the thread on correctly you will have less breakage in my opinion. It does not twist and fight in the machine.

When I bought my first Viking in 1976, my dealer told me how the thread should come off the spool from the left. That is how I have threaded every machine I have owned.

Thanks for your tip to use a thread stand for yarn. I knit and will try this great idea.

The cones fit nicely on the smaller regular thread spools like you get in some sewing kits at the $ store. Or you can use one of the cardboard tubes from an empty large spool.
For the large spools with the cardboard tube center a small strip of craft foam rolled up leaving just enough room for the spool pin stabilizes it nicely and also allows it to feed freely.
You have great tips for how to stabilize large spools of thread, esp. the type with the cardboard tube center. I love the craft foam idea. Thanks one and all for your help.

All my machines have stand up only spool holders. The thread acts as it should no matter what kind or how I thread them.
I guess the uninformed is helped without knowing it.
I have learned a lot on this board.

My manual has a guide to follow. I go by that. Much like Jan's diagram.
