From Don-isewman---??? on basting a quilt
This is something I going to play around with. And probably once, only. When basting a quilt together, is there a time period in which you can start machine quilting on a project. Is there a time period(limit) for the spray to dry. If I spray the quilt together, and dont machine quilt it, for a couple weeks. Will the quilt still be okay, to machine quilt. What is the time period when basting a quilt together, should it be machine quilted. SORRY if nothing made much since, on my ???'s. Don-isewman

I have spray basted and then let it for a few weeks and it was fine to work on. I think a great deal depends on the humity in the air. I find when its humid out the spray or tackiness gets weakened. I have known a few that store a spray basted quilt in a large tub till they can get back to work on it and its fine.
Hope to see more of your quilts soon!

i think it partially depends on the basting spray being used- some work better than others- some hold longer - some seem to let go fairly soon. my experience has been (hand quilting) is more difficult- machine quilting seems to be a better way to go when basting spray or any fusable is used. if you plan on waiting a long time before quilting i would wait until i'm ready to quilt before layering/basting- that way if the product doesn't hold a long time you won't have to re-spray, double use the product. i always spray very lightly- so it dries very quickly.

I think it depends on which spray you use, some are temporary. I know from patsy thompson she uses 505 and has come back 5 years to a quilt she sprayed and it is still working so 505 can go at least 5 years. I know the sulky one is very temporary only lasts a day or so. I would imagine most of them last quite a while

Basting products have different times listed right on the can. I have used several brands and a couple of 40" sq wall hangings are still basted and waiting after two years and still okay, I'm sorry to say. I get involved with new projects and let stuff sit till I find a need for it.
I don't think a few weeks would be a problem.
