One way to get material is to ask your friends and neighbors for any cotton blouse, skirt slacks or their husbands shirts, colored and white, bedsheets that you may be tired of using, anything that is cotton. This is one suggestion. Sometimes you can get material in bags at garage sales also. You may have to pay a small fee, but you would get some different pieces of material. Try it.

I make baby quilts, though not all are baby colors, or patterns. I do this for the pregnancy center here in our small mountain town, but I also do them as a way of healing of my own hard life ( abortion as a teen, and miscarriages as a married woman ).. I began making them after hearing about the center here, and knowing that it gets very cold, and snowy here in the winter, I began doing a few each month, but the need seems to be growing all year long, so I am trying to make at least one a week when my health allows.. A great healing, and blessing for me, but even more, a way of leaving my imprint on the lives of each little one that receieves a quilt instead of being aborted.. this is all worth the tears I am learning to cry now..

Just last week I saw a re-run of Sewing with Nancy, and her guest was the founder of the Camo Quilts Projects. I sent for a free kit (postage had to be re-imbursed), and I got it within 3 days. email addy http://www.camoquiltproject.blogspot.com/ We have a good friend who is in Afghanistan right now, and I want to send this to him to let him know that we're praying for him. I hope to be back to quilting soon....I just had shoulder surgery last Friday, physical therapy starts today.

I make lap quilts for the Wounded at Hines Veterans Hospital, Hines, Illinois. So far, since 2007, I've made over 200. I seldom see the person/persons that get them, but occasionally someone I know will tell me they got one of my little quilts. You see, no supposed to, but I sneak my first name and the date into a piece of the front pattern.

I prefer to keep my donations at the local level. I used to work for the state's Child Protective Services department and I donated baby and toddler quilts to babies in foster care and families who were unable to buy baby items. Now that I work for the department that serves needy families by providing food and cash assistance, I'm contemplating doing the same, but there's a tremendous need. I may have to stick with sending my quilts to my old colleagues who make sure they give them to the neediest of families.

Thank you for mentioning this --with the increase in wounded there is always a need for the denim quilts - called the 4 Freedom Quilts- yes, materials are supplied for theis category....

I make, and donate small quilts to our local ( and small ) pregnancy center.. its a way to give of my heart, to those babies who are being adopted out , when I know the pain of losing a child .. Each one is scrappy in design, but created in purpose.. I recieve MUCH healing with each tear that falls on each small quilt as I say a short blessing over it before I had it off to the center .. Its not much to offer these babies, but it is MUCH to receive back the healing of my past choices..

I make quilts for Kids Comforts children who's mothers or fathers are in the service 8 blocks with pictures of the family then I mail them back to the family all over the U.S. I do get some feed back which is nice. It's a small group. We are called The Stars and Stripes being working not far from Ft.Mchenry.
