What kind of batting have you been using? You might find that simply changing the type of batting will get you the warmth you're looking for. I've found wool to be very warm. Others have said poly batts are warm. I haven't used poly, so I can't comment from experience.

When I used the extra flannel with the batting, I spray-basted the two together. It takes more time and spray, obviously, but it made it easy to handle.

When I double bat , I sent it out for professional long arming. The quilt "roll" of a good size quilt, is way too much volume to handle in my regular machine.

While I do not know the answer to your question - I know from experience what the warmest "blanket" is. We were without power for 11 days in "07 due to an ice storm and I slipped on the ice and seriously hurt my back - so spent most of that time flat on my back on my couch (we had a fireplace in that room). I used every single blanket/quilt that I had here and found that the double fleece blanket that a friend gave to me was the warmest of every other type of blanket/afghan, quilt, etc. It was a double layer of fleece tied together on all 4 sides. Hope this info helps!

Where are you using quilts when it's 20 or below?? Outside it has been below 20 here but no matter what the outside temp is, it's always about 71 or 72 in the house.

I too have used fleece on the back of throws, baby quilts. Need a little extra basting and care quilting because it is knit and not as stable as a woven fabric but it does add warmth and doesn't slide off your lap.

I use to use only 100% cotton, but my quilts were too thin and not warm enough at all. I bought some wool batting and fell in love with it. It's so warm and my quilts are so much thicker!!! That's all I use now. I live in Oregon, but we get 90 degree weather in the summer. Lots of cold snaps and snow in the winter. Wool is perfect for that!
