Double Batting??
I've noticed on my lap quilts that when the temps get down low, 20s on down, the lap quilt isn't quite as warm and toasty as maybe an afghan. I'm just curious if putting two layers of batting would make it warmer, or is that just asking for trouble with your machine while trying to do FMQ?

I have added a piece of flannel to the batting and then backed the quilt with flannel to give it extra warmth. We live in Canada until the late fall and I really do appreciate the warmth of this quilt. I machine quilted it myself using a DM and had no problems with it.

I would try two of the suggestions. Get some wool batting (make sure it is machine washable) and make your backing in flannel. I bought a wool quilt made from squares and it kept me TOO warm! Good Luck !!

afghans feel warmer because of the yarn that is used - just like flannel "feels" warmer because of the type of material. Cotton quilts feel "cooler" because of the type of material it is. Our bodies eventually warm it up. Think about how many of us would rather sleep on flannel sheets, flannel jammies because they are warmer than our cotton sheets that are on the bed in the summer.

I have had good luck using a double layer of 80/20 batting. It was still easy enough to FMQ on my domestic machine and pretty much doubled the warmth. Wool is my favorite, but I don't use it all the time...

A question for those of you who double batting or add a layer of flannel to batting---Do you glue those two layers together (with Elmer's washable school glue) before you glue on the quilt top and back?
