I don't like the look of 1/4-inch binding, it just looks too skimpy to me. I prefer my finished binding to be 3/8 inch visible, so I cut my strips 2.5 inches wide. Its all a matter of personal preference.

2 1/2 is the right number, but try not ironing the binding in half. A friend told me to try this and it really works well. She said it lets the binding lay around the quilt. This is the way I do mine now.

I sometimes do 3" because I like a puffy binding. It's up to you, but I do think 2" is cutting it tight

I do 2-1/4 " binding if I am going to do by hand, and 2-1/2" if binding by machine.

I cut my binding strips at 2 1/4 inches wide for regular fabric but when i use a heavier fabric like flannel, I cut them at 2 1/2 inches.

    For 1/4" binding, I cut 2 1/8" strips. For 3/8" binding (which I prefer on quilts), I cut 2 7/8" strips.

I'm working on my first one now. I cut it 2 1/2". I'm finding that if I fold it around tightly there is more on the back than the front. Should I line it up with the seam that I created when I sewed the binding to the front? If I do this, the binding doesn't lay up tight with the side of the quilt.
