Quilting Angel

I seem to be having a continuing problem with binding. I have cut 2" strips for binding on the last two quilts I have done. I fold that in half, press and sew the raw edges to the quilt with mitered corners. The problem comes when I flip it over to sew down on the back. It seems that I have very little fabric to work with. Did I do this right, or do I maybe need to cut my strips a bit wider? Thanks for all the help.

Most bindings are cut at 2-1/2" wide, Fons and Porter do 2-1/4" but 2-1/2" seems to be the standard for most quilts. It sure will take care of your problem easily by cutting them wider. If you cut too many strips, make your own jelly roll.

I think your strip is just too narrow. I usually cut 2 1/4"

I cut my strips 2 1/2 others say 2 1/4.

I like 2 1/4. I find 2 1/2 gives me too much to fold over. I always trim the edges of the quilt after the binding is attached and that gives me just enough to sew down the way I want to!

I usually do 2.5" strips. I've been using Sharon Schamber's method for gluing, and finding I'm much more accurate, have been thinking to using 2.25" strips next time!

Yup, cut it either 2-1/4" or 2-1/2". The thickness of the batting will make a difference too, as will heavier fabrics like flannel.

When in doubt, make a sample piece, 6 or 8 inches long, baste it on and try turning it over to see if it's big enough.

2 1/2" gives a 1/2" binding. I read that you go 4 times the binding width but that is for FINISHED width, which I discovered the hard way too. :) :)

2 inches is tight but works. you just have to use 1/4 inch seam allowance and pull it tightly around to the back of the quilt.
