    Default Double Irish Chain Help

    Good Morning,

I am hoping that you can guide me in the right direction. Some has given me a tote of baby clothes and asked me to make a quilt from them, Their request was that it not look like baby clothes. I have decided on a double Irish chain, queen size. Has anyone ever made this pattern using 3.5 inch squares instead of 2.5 inches? I don't want it to look "chunky".

Thank you in advance for an any advice you can offer

    Happy Quilting
    Laurie

Here's a picture of a scrappy DIC but the blocks are smaller.

Can you picture this quilt using 3 1/2" squares? IMHO, I'm afraid 'chunky' is what you may get. Is there any chance you could make the quilt with 2 1/2" squares? I just think it would look better.

The bigger the squares, the bigger the final quilt needs to be or it will indeed look "chunky". If you haven't yet cut up the baby clothes, I would stick to 2.5" squares.

I'm inclined to agree that 2.5" squares would be the better choice. Besides it not looking chunky, the baby fabric would be better disguised, and you could repeat more of the same fabrics throughout, for more cohesiveness.

I agree with Zozee and ArtsyOne about the 2.5”...besides, if you tried it with a 3.5” it might not look like a traditional DIC. I’ll be curious to see what others think.

The centre of this quilt is 36 squares high, so if you used 3.5" squares it would be 108" tall (plus borders). Imagine this quilt being about 50% wider, and queen sized... does it look too chunky? If so, then you should use smaller squares.

I think "chunky" is in the eye of the beholder. 2.5" squares work well for small quilts, but IMO can sometimes make the overall pattern too small for large ones.
